Well, if all this sounds good to you, read on as we talk more about this hidden gem. Here is our article review for Call of Cthulhu.

Call of Cthulhu: What is it?

Call of Cthulhu is a well-made game that successfully captures the atmosphere of Lovecraft’s work. The game is dark, atmospheric, and suspenseful, and it does a good job of making the player feel like they are in danger. The game’s visuals are also impressive, and the environments are well-crafted and detailed. Despite the horrors that lurk beyond every corner, you cannot help but appreciate its eerie atmosphere and interesting art choices.

The game follows Edward Pierce, a private investigator who is hired to investigate the disappearance of a young woman in the town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts. As Pierce investigates, he uncovers a dark and twisted mystery that threatens to unravel his sanity. The story is gripping and filled with clever twists and turns. Players will be glued to their seats eager to follow where the story narrative will take them next.

A Modern Take On The Classic Pen-and-Paper RPG

Call of Cthulhu Gameplay

The game’s gameplay is a mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and role-playing. The exploration side of things is rewarding, due to the many secrets you will find. Not only does it serve to further the story the game is telling, but it also adds to the overall strong world-building Call of Cthulhu is aiming to accomplish. You will feel more engrossed and invested in everything that is happening within the game, and that is always a good thing.

Call of Cthulhu is also filled with impactful dialogue options that can alter your gaming experience in one way or the other. Its RPG elements, may not be its strongest suit, but it is admittedly impressive. It isn’t as deep as other modern games trying to get into the RPG genre, but it is serviceable. It definitely adds to the overall experience and is one that you shouldn’t take on a surface level.

Its exploration and RPG elements may be great and all, but Call of Cthulhu’s main selling point is definitely its puzzle-solving and detective work sections. It is a modern take on the classic pen-and-paper RPG in every sense of the word. Its puzzles are deep and will surely necessitate a minute or two of thinking.

Today, where puzzle-solving sections are now seemingly limited to “push this on that corner” or “strike the switch on that high platform,” Call of Cthulhu’s clever and truly thought-provoking puzzles are a breath of fresh air. For this alone, we can say that Call of Cthulhu is a love letter for the horror and puzzle RPGs that came before it.

Call of Cthulhu’s Most Enticing Factors

Here are some of the factors that work in Call of Cthulhu’s favor:

  • The game is based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, one of the most influential horror writers of all time. Lovecraft’s stories are well-known for their cosmic horror, which explores the idea that humanity is insignificant in the face of vast, unknowable forces. This theme is central to Call of Cthulhu, and it is one of the things that makes the game so compelling.
  • The game is well-written and well-designed. The rules are easy to learn, but they still allow for a great deal of flexibility and creativity. The setting is also rich in detail. It provides a great backdrop for the game’s stories.
  • The game is atmospheric and immersive. The use of sound effects, music, and visuals helps to create a truly terrifying experience. Players will feel like they are actually in the game world, and they will be on the edge of their seats as they try to survive the horrors that await them.
  • The game is challenging. Players will need to use all of their skills and resources if they want to survive. There is no easy way to win, and even the smallest mistake can be fatal. This makes the game even more exciting, as players never know what is going to happen next.
