Horizon Forbidden West DLC expansion titled Burning Shores was exclusively released on the PlayStation 5 on April 19th, 2023. I was eager to get my hands on it the day it went out so I finished the main game a day before.
This expansion takes Aloy to the Burning Shores, a volcanic archipelago constructed from the ruins of Los Angeles that becomes accessible once the main plot is completed. It’s worth noting how beautiful the game looks going into it and you would really appreciate the detail they put into it from the clouds, to the sea, to the eruptions and violent seismic reactions that you’ll experience in it.
Going into the new areas of the map in this DLC (spoiler warning) you get to meet new characters and explore what is now Hollywood, or at least the ruins of it. The game also reveals of a new threat, without giving too much of it, the antagonist is one of the thirteen Zeniths to escape aboard the Odyssey.
What makes this DLC amazing is that it has so much to offer apart from letting you experience the ruins of los angeles into a treacherous archipelago.
A New Storyline:
The Burning Shores DLC introduces a brand new storyline to the game, featuring new characters and challenges for Aloy to face. The story takes place after the events of the main game and follows Aloy as she investigates a sinister new threat that Sylens reveals.
New Environment:
The Burning Shores introduce a variety of new environments for you to explore, including Hollywood and the deep waters of what used to be Los Angeles. (Flying through the clouds is such an immersive addition too that I definitely couldn’t get enough of)
New Machines:
Burning Shores also introduces several dangerous untamed wilds for you to fight, including a new type of frog-like machine and a new variation of flying machines. These machines are more powerful than anything Aloy has faced before and will require you to use all of their skills to take them down.
New Weapons and Gear:
To help you take on these new challenges, the DLC also introduces new weapons and gear for Aloy to use. With additional face paints and outfit customization, it’s really worth going through the zones and checking everything out.
New Activities:
The Burning Shores DLC adds a number of new activities for you to enjoy. And even references from the base game that you surely would appreciate. There are also new side quests, errands, activities, and collectibles to discover.
Simply put, Horizon Forbidden West: The Burning Shores DLC is an exciting expansion that introduces a ton of new content to an already fantastic game. With a brand new storyline, new environments, new machines, new weapons and gear, and new activities to enjoy, this DLC is sure to keep you entertained for hours on end.
Guerrilla Games outdid itself once again with this new expansion to the Horizon series of video games. Whether you’re a fan of the main game or you’re just looking for a new adventure, The Burning Shores DLC is definitely worth trying out.
