Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Release Date Window Revealed

Last Updated on June 9, 2023

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to the remake of the beloved RPG, finally has a release window. While it was initially thought that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date will be somewhere in late 2023, it seems the highly-awaited title has been pushed back a few months. As per Square Enix’s official announcement trailer, it’ll be coming to the PS5 in early 2024. Notably, the announcement was made as part of Geoff Kelley’s Summer Game Fest last June 9th. And it isn’t the only Final Fantasy series entrant that made an appearance in the event.

The Leadup to the Announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Release Date

FF7 Rebirth is the follow-up to the highly-successful Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020. It is the middle entry of the planned trilogy of Final Fantasy games remaking the original Final Fantasy 7. Over the last few days, the Final Fantasy developers have been teasing massive news about the game through a series of tweets. In fact, they lined it up so perfectly that the seventh info tweet aligned with the Summer Game Fest event itself!

This involves the confirmation of new characters, what sounds like a more open-world approach, and more dedicated music rearrangements. On the day of the release date announcement, the company hinted that “more information will be revealed soon.”

FF7 Rebirth Aerith

And alas! More information about the game indeed was brought to light. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a brand new story in the ongoing remake saga. The synopsis basically goes like this: After the crazy events that transpired in Midgar, Cloud Strife, and his friends embark on a new journey across the wider world outside the dystopian city to find out the truth about Gaia and put an end to the terror inflicted by Sephiroth.

Over on Twitter, creative director Tetsuya Nomura teased that players should stay tuned to the official Final Fantasy account for future updates. That is something we’ll certainly be doing.

FF7 Rebirth’s Newest Trailer

In a trailer, we got a major new look at the upcoming game. Cloud and crew wandered grassy fields, visited what looked to be Cosmo Canyon, and took on some fearsome enemies. Even Yuffie, who first came back in Final Fantasy VII Remake’s DLC, showed up in the trailer. Gamers also rejoiced at the fact that fan-favorite Red XIII will now be a playable character in FF7 Rebirth. It seems that the combo moves present on FF7 Remake Intergrade will return in the sequel as well.

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH – Summer Game Fest 2023 Trailer

As players unravel a gripping narrative rich with mysteries to uncover, they will also witness the personal journey of each party member and strengthen their bonds to work together and face off against powerful enemies. During the Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase, Square Enix released new gameplay for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth while also revealing that it will release on two discs.

The fact that the game will have two discs is very interesting. For one, it speaks volumes to the scope and game size of FF7 Rebirth. Take note that very expansive and truly admirable games, such as Elden Ring, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War: Ragnarok, only have one disc. With that in mind, I guess it’s safe to assume that FF7 Rebirth will be twice as large as these games. It is also worth noting that it is the first game in the PS5 era to have two discs. Truly ambitious.

Final Words

Of course, Rebirth isn’t the only major Final Fantasy release coming. Final Fantasy XVI, which takes the series in a much darker, Game of Thrones-inspired direction, is launching very soon. It hits the PS5 on June 22nd. Final Fantasy series fans still have that to look forward to.

FF7 Rebirth Tifa and Sephiroth

And to be honest, we are a bit perplexed about Square Enix’s decision to release the new trailer of FF7 Rebirth before the release of FFXVI. Yes, the 16th installment in the legendary Final Fantasy series is one of the most anticipated games of 2023. However, excitement for the continuation of the FF7 remake series may cool off the interest of some gamers towards it.

Over on Twitter, creative director Tetsuya Nomura teased that players should stay tuned to the official Final Fantasy account for future updates. That is something we’ll certainly be doing while counting down the days toward the official announcement of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date.
