The never-ending debate for the Best Starter Pokemon continues in the latest installment, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Given the choice of three starters, you will only pick one for the rest of your journey. This decision falls heavily on every trainer out there and on every installment of the franchise.

Journey across Paldea as a Pokemon trainer! You can purchase your very own Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Double Pack for the Nintendo Switch on this link.

Since you can only pick one, some try to do their best to figure out which is the best out of the three. Each Starter Pokemon of Scarlet and Violet has its own merits. The fire croc, Fuecoco, the duckling, Quaxly, and the Grass Cat, Sprigatito, have their own strengths and weaknesses.

To make things harder for everyone, each Starter Pokemon has a different type namely: Fire, Water, and Grass. In Scarlet and Violet, all starters’ Final Evolutions have Dual Typing. Personally, that makes it harder for me to choose which is the best.

While it is not easy to pick which is the best, we can make it easier by listing out the pros and cons. There is nothing better than determining the best companion you can have in your journey across Paldea.

In this article, we will talk about the Best Starter Pokemon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Fuecoco: The Fire Type Starter Pokemon

The Fire Starter in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Sprigatito

Fuecoco is the darling of the Starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The cute Fire Croc Pokemon quickly gained popularity due to its cuteness and open mouth. Fuecoco is known for its playful personality and its love of food.

The final evolution of Fuecoco is a Fire/Ghost type Pokemon called Skeledirge. Skeledirge is a large, bipedal crocodile with a skeletal appearance. In addition, its Pokedex Entry classifies Skeledirge as the Singer Pokemon. Its Pokedex Entry reads: “Skeledirge’s gentle singing soothes the souls of all that hear it. It burns its enemies to a crisp with flames of over 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit.”

A Fire/Ghost type combination is one of the rare combinations you can see in the game. Skeledirge offers a lot of coverage thanks to its move set. In addition, it has an unusual stat spread once you take a look at its base stats. While it is a strong attacker, that is not the only thing it has going for it.

Skeledirge Base Stats: HP 104/ Attack 75/ Defense 100/ Special Attack 110/ Special Defense 75/ Speed 66

Skeledirge boasts a considerable amount of bulk for a Fire Type Pokemon. It has high HP and Defense base stats. Additionally, it has a high Special Attack stat that finishes its strengths. Its low Speed hinders its ability to sweep, but it makes up for that with the ability to tank some hits.

If you want a Fire Type with a lot of versatility thanks to its typing, stats, and move set, then the best choice for you is Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokemon.

Sprigatito: The Grass Type Starter Pokemon

The Grass Starter in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Sprigatito

If Fuecoco is the darling of the Starter Pokemon, Sprigatito would be the gladiator. The cute little kitten of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is actually a very strong Pokemon for competitive battling. While the kitten does not look strong at first glance, it is a very capable Pokemon when it comes to battles.

The Final Evolution of Sprigatito is the Magician Pokemon, Meowscarada. Meowscarada is a large, bipedal cat with a flower crown. In addition, this Pokemon sports a Grass/Dark Dual Typing to help its case as the Best Starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

What made Meowscarada so popular in Competitive battles is its hidden ability, Protean. Its hidden ability is one of the rarest abilities in the game, and it is one of the most popular ones too. Protean changes the Pokemon’s type to the type of the move it’s using. This ability opens up a ton of strategic options when it comes to battling.

Meowscarada Base Stats: HP 76/ Attack 110/ Defense 70/ Special Attack 81/ Special Defense 70/ Speed 123

One quick look at its Base Stats and you can easily see what its role would be in any team. Meowscarada boasts a high Attack Stat and it has elite Speed coming in at 123. It packs a ton of punch and it can easily outspeed any opponent. In addition, its signature move, Flower Trick, never misses and always critically hits.

If you want a versatile Pokemon that can easily change its type thanks to Protean, then Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokemon, is the best choice.

Quaxly: The Water Type Starter

The Water Starter Pokemon Quaxly

The Duckling Pokemon, Quaxly, is the elegant dancer of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It starts off as a cute little duckling with strong legs even for its size. While it is not the most popular Starter Pokemon, it has its own strengths that should not be underestimated.

Its final evolution is Quaquaval, the Dancer Pokemon. Quaquaval wields the dual typing of Water and Fighting to its full advantage. The combination of Water and Fighting types is one of the best features of this starter Pokemon.

Quaquaval Base Stats: HP 85/ Attack 120/ Defense 80/ Special Attack 85/ Special Defense 75/ Speed 85

Quaquaval has a good all-around stat spread but what jumps out is its high Attack Stat. While it does not boast the highest Speed, its signature move will ensure that it can sweep an entire team when set up properly. In addition to having good stats, the power of Quaquaval lies within its hidden ability.

Moxie is the hidden ability of Quaquaval. Moxie increases the user’s Attack by one stage upon fainting an opponent. Moreover, can fully utilize Quaquaval as a deadly physical attack sweeper. Just set up some Aqua Steps to increase your speed and you are good to go.

The best starter Pokemon will depend on your playstyle and your personal preferences. All of us have our own biases. Thankfully, Game Freak made three wonderful Starter Pokemon who are all strong in their own ways. So go on your journey with your own Best Starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
