The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an upcoming action-adventure stealth video game in Middle-earth that fans and critics absolutely hate. Any fan of the trilogy wouldn’t dare touch the game after the heavy thrashing from some of the top video game critics.
If you want to know where the hate is coming from, you can check out the game through this link.
What is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum?
It is a unique game that Daedalic Entertainment developed and Nacon published. The game setting is inside the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It also follows the story and point-of-view (POV) of Gollum from the original movie trilogy. Gamers can play it on the PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will also release tomorrow, May 26, 2023.
Gollum’s adventure from his POV involves the outwitting and outsmarting of some of the powerful characters in Middle-earth. Yet, it also shows an incredibly faithful adaptation of the film series. It shows what happens after the events of The Hobbit with Bilbo Baggins. Yet, it is before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum going to the Black Gate.
Other powerful characters in the game include the demonic spider Shelob, the Elvenking Thranduil, and even Sauron. However, even with its stealth gameplay and impressive storyline characters, the game received hate from fans. So, what makes The Lord of the Rings: Gollum a heavily disliked video game?
Why Do Fans Hate The Lord of the Rings: Gollum?

If you check the criticisms from the top video game critics, you will find a ton of reasons. The major complaint from the fans says that the game design is too cartoonish. It is simple, dull, boring, and repetitive, which strays away from the complexity of Tolkien’s fantasy world.
However, although public statements say the events in the game remain loyal to the source material, critics disapprove. They also express concerns about how the video game speculates about what happens and is unfaithful to the canonical storyline.
If there is one thing we learned, it’s that fans only want one thing: developers being faithful to the source material. That also means they want a game where Middle-earth is dark, grim, and gritty. However, the game’s cartoon-like design strays away from that, making it seem like a kid’s game instead.
Fans also want challenging and engaging gameplay. However, the game’s repetitive nature, bad level design, and poorly implemented stealth ruin their hopes. It also reached the point where even the most loyal fan wouldn’t want to touch the video game.
What Is Going to Happen to the Game Now?
In our humble opinion, was there a need for this game? After all, there are reports of a new Lord of the Rings MMO game in the works. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum simply looks like a game trying to make a unique POV of the events in Tolkien’s fantasy world. Yet, who knows? There might be a few fans who will enjoy the game. Only time will tell.
