Pokemon are creatures of fantastical origin and just like in the real world, there are rare Pokemon that are almost never seen. The rarest Pokemon are great at hiding from us Pokemon Trainers, but their rarity has only increased their value.

In this article, we will take a look at some of the rarest Pokemon in the mainline games and the Trading Card Game.

The Pikachu Illustrator Card

The famous Pikachu Illustrator Card is the most valuable card in the entire history of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. A PSA10 Gem Mint Condition of this card sold for as high as $6,000,000. If you are wondering why it sold for millions of dollars, there are only 39 copies of this card.

Atsuko Nishida was the artist behind the card. The Pikachu Illustrator Card was part of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration contest in 1998, which people can get as a prize. The card features a distinct and elegant design which only helped its popularity.

Pokémon Blastoise Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Holo

The second entry on this list is another card in the Pokemon TCG Franchise. The Wizards of the Coast created the coveted Pokémon Blastoise Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Holo as a presentation piece for its meeting with Nintendo. Being a presentation piece, only two cards were ever produced. Due to its rarity, it sold for as high as $360,000 in an auction.

1999 Pokémon Base Set Shadowless 1st Edition Holo Charizard

The 1999 Pokémon Base Set Shadowless 1st Edition Holo Charizard is one of the recognized cards of the franchise due to its rarity and value. There are only 16 copies of this card to ever exist in our reality. At an auction, it sold for a whopping $420,000. The sold card was a PSA10 Gem Mint Condition and is the highest price ever for a base Charizard card.

Mew

One of the rarest Pokemon, Mew.

If you ever think how rare Mew is, you should double that because it is an extremely rare Mythical Pokemon. You can only catch Mew in the original Pokemon Red and Blue games through glitches in the program. If you are wondering why that is the case, the developers at Game Freak created Mew as a joke. Moreover, Game Freak did not intend to add Mew to the final copy of the game.

Celebi

As a mythical Pokemon, it lives up to its reputation with its elusiveness and rarity. In the mainline Pokemon games, you can only catch Celebi through real-time special events. For example, In North America, GameStop stores distributed Celebi from February 21 to March 6, 2011. Additionally, people acquired it from the tour promoting the Black and White games that began on February 5, 2011.

Jirachi

Just like the other entries, you cannot obtain Jirachi by normal means. Jirachi the Wishmaker doesn’t seem too fond of granting our wishes by catching it. The only way to get a Jirachi is to download it from a bonus disk or special events. Additionally, in the United States, Gameshop Stores gave out Jirachi from February to March 2010.

Deoxys

The Mythical Pokemon, Deoxys, is of alien origin and its elusiveness is almost unmatched. There are only a few games in existence wherein you can catch Deoxys. In Pokemon Emerald, you need to have an Aurora Ticket which you can obtain through the Mystery Gift. Moreover, even though you have the ticket, you still need to solve a hard puzzle to make Deoxys appear.

Arceus

The God of Pokemon, Arceus, is, of course, one of the rarest Pokemon in existence. Originally, you can only catch this Legendary Pokemon through the use of a cheating device. You can catch Arceus in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum versions after obtaining the Azure Flute event item. Additionally, you can catch Arceus in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
