Project Q: Sony’s Newest Handheld Device

At the closing moments of the aforementioned 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Jim Ryan dropped a bombshell. He announced Sony’s latest attempt at a handheld device. Project Q, not the device’s final name, will purportedly feature an 8-inch HD screen sandwiched between all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller. It will also support adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, which are two of the key features of DualSense.

For the lack of a better comparison, Project Q looks like a customized DualSense controller. Instead of the touchpad, it features a relatively big HD screen.

Moreover, Project Q will be able to stream PS5 games at up to 1080p and 60fps over Wi-Fi via remote play. This means that players will be able to enjoy their favorite PS5 games on the go as long as they have an internet connection.

Sony’s pursuit to revolutionize cloud gaming is indeed respectable. However, some people are quite disappointed knowing that the announced gaming device will not be a full-fledged independent handheld one. It isn’t like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Project Q isn’t a dedicated portable gaming platform.

Ryan did not say how much Project Q will cost or any tentative release date, but he did say that more details regarding the new device will be available in the months ahead.

It is also worth noting that Project Q wasn’t the only new PlayStation-branded hardware shown during the recent PlayStation Showcase. Ryan also unveiled the first pair of official PlayStation gaming earbuds. As per the announcement, it can connect to PS5 consoles, PCs, and smartphones using Bluetooth. It is said that the new earbuds can deliver a lossless audio experience at incredibly low latency, resulting in a more premium sound quality during play sessions.

The Surprise of The 2023 PlayStation Showcase

PlayStation Showcase Project Q Features

While the recently held PlayStation Showcase was indeed full of amazing surprises and announcements, none caught gamers off guard more than the announcement of the new Sony handheld device.

That said, may we remind you that the existence of Project Q was first leaked back in early April. And as we found out today, what the leaks claimed back then was accurate and mostly true. Sony isn’t putting all its chips in the handheld gaming space as one would expect. Instead, it only aims to create a supplementary device that can enhance the overall gaming experience players can get out of the PlayStation 5.

This approach may indeed disappoint many, but the fact that Sony is looking to penetrate the market once again is a good sign of better things ahead. Nevertheless, we are excited to see what Project Q may have in store for us. We are certainly eager to hear more about it in the next few months.
